Typically, the base portion will be fastened to a surface, followed by the butting up and fixing in place of the boards, and finally, the pressing in of the barbed top to conceal the joint and screw heads. Depending on how firmly the top is pressed in, the barbs allow usage with a variety of board thicknesses, producing an incredibly robust joint.
